The Election Commission has said no to the release of funds related to government projects in the Andhra Pradesh elections. It has been suggested that the money linked to these schemes should be deposited in the accounts of the beneficiaries only after the polling is over. The Election Commission has informed the AP High Court in this regard. The EC has received proposals through the selection committee on release of project-related funds from the AP government amounting to over Rs 14,000 crore. But if this money is paid into the beneficiaries’ accounts, the crucial silent period of the electoral process will be disrupted and the sense of equal opportunity will be compromised. The Andhra Pradesh government has sought permission from the EC to disburse money related to various schemes into the accounts of beneficiaries. He sought funds related to various programs like YSR Cheyutha, YSR ABC Nestham, Asara, Jagananna Vidya Deevena, Rythu Kasipasa Saayam. After the Election Commission refused to release the funds, many beneficiaries of the schemes approached the AP High Court. The EC’s order not to deposit funds related to social programs was challenged in court. The hearing on this motion was held on Tuesday.

The lawyer argued on behalf of the Andhra Pradesh government that all the projects for which funds are to be released are underway. He told the court that if the funds are not released now, they will be exhausted by the end of May. The High Court asked whether the end of May meant there was still time. Furthermore, the Electoral Commission’s lawyer argued that the Commission had not requested a halt to the release of funds linked to the schemes. He informed the court that the adjournment would only last until the end of voting. They demanded explanations on why there is an urgent need to release funds linked to these projects.

The court ordered the AP government to respond to and re-apply the questions posed by the Election Commission. The High Court said that after the decision taken by the EC, it would consider and hear the arguments. While the hearing was adjourned until today, the Election Commission informed the court of its decision. He indicated that voting would be completed on May 13. After this date, the money can be deposited into the accounts. And it will be necessary to see what kind of decision the EC will take on the issue of release of funds related to the High Court projects.
