Magnitude 4.0 earthquake hits New Jersey, second in U.S. today

Another magnitude 4.0 earthquake shook New Jersey on Friday at 5:59 p.m. local time. The earthquake occurred at a depth of 9 kilometers, according to the European Mediterranean Seismological Center (EMSC).

In a post on X (formerly Twitter), New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy wrote: “New Jersey just suffered an aftershock. Please follow the emergency tips below and avoid calling 911 unless there is a real emergency. »

New York State Governor Kathy Hochul also said: “A magnitude 4.0 aftershock from this morning’s earthquake in New Jersey has just occurred. We continue to examine critical infrastructure and no significant damage has been reported at this time.”

The epicenter of the aftershock would be 7.4 miles northwest of Bridgewater, just over the Somerset County line, YEARS reported.

Before that, a smaller aftershock, magnitude 2.0, was also reported by the USGS in Bedminter, New Jersey, at 11:20 a.m. Friday. New Jersey was hit by a 4.8 magnitude earthquake on April 5.

The earthquake struck 7 km north-northeast of Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) reported.

It occurred at 19:53:20 (UTC) and its depth was recorded at 116.5 km. According to the USGS, the epicenter of the magnitude 4.8 earthquake was found at 40.683° north latitude and 74.753° west longitude, respectively.

The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration said the earthquake that hit several parts of the United States could impact air traffic in New York, New Jersey, Philadelphia and Baltimore.
