 : Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati (IIT Guwahati) has been named as one of the best universities in the world for the study of Data Science and Petroleum Engineering subjects.

IIT Guwahati’s achievements are based on the latest edition of the world’s most viewed university rankings.

The 2024 edition of the QS World University Rankings by Subject, compiled by Quacquarelli Symonds, a global higher education analytics company, has named the world’s best universities for the study of 55 academic disciplines. IIT Guwahati has particularly excelled in data science, achieving a global ranking of 51 to 70, and petroleum engineering, where it ranks between 51 and 100 globally.

Furthermore, the premier institute achieved commendable rankings in broad areas such as engineering and technology with a ranking of 210, up from a ranking of 222 in 2023, natural sciences with a ranking of 343, up from a ranking of 379. the same year, and & Humanities with rank 510-550.

Additionally, IIT Guwahati was ranked for the first time in the Arts & Humanities category for Business & Management Studies and Agriculture & Forestry.

Speaking on the achievement, IIT Guwahati Director Prof Rajeev Ahuja said he was proud that the institute had become a global leader in the field of education and research.

The outstanding rankings in Data Science and Petroleum Engineering, as well as the institute’s overall progress in various disciplines and subjects reflect our unwavering commitment to excellence and innovation,” said Professor Ahuja.

On the other hand, as many as four subjects at IIT Guwahati also saw an improvement in their rankings this year, including Chemistry – from rank 301-250 in 2023 to 251-300 in 2024, Biological Sciences – from rank 451 – 500 last year to 401-450 this year, environmental studies- from rank 301-350 last year to 201-250 this year, and economics and econometrics- from rank 501-530 last year to 451- 500 this year.

The QS World University Rankings by Subject 2024 include music as a new academic discipline. Notably, QS uses five key metrics to establish subject rankings, including reputation indicators based on surveys of academics and employers, citations per article, H-index, and international research network .

Established in 1994, IIT Guwahati celebrated its 25th anniversary in 2019. The institute currently has eleven departments, nine interdisciplinary academic centers and five schools covering all major disciplines of engineering, science, healthcare , management and human sciences.

IIT Guwahati offers Bachelor of Technology (BTech), Bachelor of Design (BDes), Bachelor of Science Hons (BSc Hons), Master of Arts (MA), Master of Design (MDes), Masters in Technology (MTech), Master of Science Programs (MSc), Master of Science-Research (MS-R), Master of Business Administration (MBA), and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). The institute provides a residential campus for 439 faculty members and more than 8,600 students.

The institute retained the seventh position among India’s top engineering institutions and the ninth position in the overall and research categories in the India Rankings 2023 declared by the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) of the Ministry of Health. Union Education.
