The Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation has installed the state’s first Intelligent Traffic Management System (ITMS) on the Mumbai-Pune Expressway. There are always traffic jams on the Mumbai-Pune highway. For this reason, drivers often have to suffer. On an average, 40,000 to 60,000 vehicles queue up on the Mumbai Pune Expressway during weekdays and weekends. This causes traffic jams. AI will now be used to control traffic jams. The intelligent traffic management system will be launched in the first week of June, senior MSRDC officials said.
For the first phase, 39 grants were installed up to a distance of 95 km from the highway. This will make it easier to monitor drivers who violate traffic rules. For this, 218 artificial intelligence cameras were installed. This will make it easier to act against 17 types of traffic violations. All these cameras and cameras at toll plazas will be equipped for automatic recognition of vehicle number plates. This will enable the police to issue e-challans using vehicle registration plates.
All highway entrances will be equipped with weighing machines for freight carriers. Officials said a weather monitoring system would be installed at 11 locations. In addition, 36 emergency vehicles, including tow trucks, cranes and ambulances on the highway, will be equipped with tracking systems. There will therefore be billboards in 11 locations. Additionally, all information such as traffic information and updates on road closures will be provided to motorists. Superintendent of Road Traffic Police Panvel Tanaji Chikle said modern technology would significantly improve road management and safety of motorists.
