Polo Palladio in Jaipur is the new incarnation of the 116-year-old Rajasthan Polo Club members club. It is launched by Italian businesswoman Barbara Miolini, already influential in the local hospitality scene with her existing restaurant in Jaipur, Bar Palladio, and her hotel outside the city, Villa Palladio.
The Jaipur Polo Palladio club: “old-school but exuberant”
For the renovation of the club, Miolini called on his long-time collaborator, the Dutch interior designer Marie-Anne Oudejans. “Marie-Anne has such a special view on history and heritage. We started dreaming together, because our visions were so close,” shares Miolini.
Oudejans’ magical style embraces vibrant colors, bold geometry, and modernized traditional Indian motifs. With Polo Palladio, she and Miolini sought to exude a masculine, old-school yet exuberant look that would honor the traditions of polo and the history of the club. ‘To redecorate the club, I took inspiration from Pacho [the state of Rajasthan’s young Maharaja], his horses and his passion for polo. And I added a “Palladio” touch and a European feeling,” explains Miolini.
The restaurant’s color palette includes shades of mahogany brown, forest green and mimosa yellow, each with a hidden meaning. The brown of the wooden panels is a tribute to the horses, while the green is a nod to the lawns of the polo field. Yellow represents the sun, the royal emblem of Rajasthan.
These hues are not only incorporated into the furniture upholstery but also into the graphic stripes and chevrons throughout the space. Wall and ceiling frescoes feature hand-painted brown horses, yellow acacia trees and green foliage. Meanwhile, a white frangipani painted on the wall adds a fresh touch to the maximalist interior.
Marble flooring and wooden furniture with scalloped edges highlight local craftsmanship.
The lighting has been carefully thought out. “We removed some walls and windows and installed arches to create different spaces. During the day, all gates can be opened to the polo field, giving the feeling of being part of the game. In the evening, the candlelight gives a sense of [privacy]”, explique Oudejans.
Guests can learn about the club’s history through memorabilia on display, such as sepia photographs of the late Queen Elizabeth II, letters, trophies, vintage polo sticks, trunks and more.
It all comes together to give Polo Palladio a premium mix and match feel, crafted with meticulous care.
