Calcutta High Court dismisses emergency hearing for plea seeking action against Calcutta Police statements allegedly tarnishing WB Governor’s office

The Calcutta High Court has refused to hear an urgent plea seeking the court’s intervention over statements made by the Calcutta Police to media sources that allegedly tarnished the office of Governor CV Ananda Bose.

The lawyer argued that the police made comments in the media that allegedly tarnished the reputation of the governor, who enjoyed constitutional immunity under Article 361.

After hearing the arguments, the division bench of Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam and Justice Hiranmay Bhattacharya said that this could not form a basis for a DIP and that the Court was not in a position to advise the State Governor on such a matter.

“There is no PIL on this, we cannot advise what a governor should do in a PIL,” » said the bench.

According to local reports, Governor Bose was accused by one of the female employees of Raj Bhavan for alleged sexual harassment. Local media reports claim that the governor refused to allow Police to enter the Raj Bhavan premises to conduct their investigation based on the woman’s complaint.

It was also reported that the governor’s office had launched an online portal to share CCTV footage of the Raj Bhavan with citizens in a bid to refute the allegations. The Raj Bhavan also organized a screening of the said images for members of the press at its premises this morning.
