After Sunrisers ’s demolition job of Super Giants at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium, Hyderabad, Indians have become the first team to be knocked out of the playoff race of IPL 2024. With two matches remaining. play, MI must play for pride and avoid the wooden spoon at the end of a disappointing season.

It has been an eventful season for MI as the change of guard – with Hardik Pandya replacing Rohit Sharma as skipper – has not helped change their fortunes on the field, while off the field, the MI management has had to fight fires because of the fans. backlash following the decision to bring in Pandya in place of five-time title-winning skipper Rohit.

Why MI can no longer qualify for IPL 2-024 playoffs

However, despite a difficult transition, MI left a lot to be desired on the pitch itself, suffering eight defeats in 12 matches. With two more matches to play, MI can reach a maximum of 12 points by the end of the league stage, which would not be enough to secure a top-four finish. After the SRH vs LSG match, three teams already have 12 points – CSK, DC and LSG. CSK have three games left, while DC and LSG have two each.

LSG and DC will face each other next week, meaning one of these teams will eventually reach 14 points and MI won’t be able to make up that figure mathematically even if they win their remaining two games – against current leader of the ranking, KKR. and KJV.

MI’s disappointing season

MI had a tough start to their IPL 2024 campaign, losing their opening match against Pandya’s former team Titans by six runs at the Narendra Modi Stadium, . This was followed by an absolute bombardment from SRH, who accumulated the highest ever IPL total of 277/3 by demolishing the MI bowling unit. Although the batters showed courage to respond with 246/5, they lost the match by 31 runs. Against Royals, they lost their third consecutive match by 6 runs.

It was in their 4th IPL 2024 match that they notched their first win by posting 234/5 and then restricting DC to 205/8 in Mumbai. This was followed by a victory against RCB at home, but they suffered a defeat against CSK in the next match. They beat Kings in Mullanpur before suffering a series of four defeats which significantly derailed their campaign. Two of those four losses were quite heavy – a nine-wicket drubbing at the hands of RR while defending 179 and another run-fest in in which DC plundered 257/4.

MI’s response, although spirited (247/9), did not end in victory. In Mumbai, they managed to beat SRH by seven wickets, but in their reverse match last night, MI were blown away by the metaphorical storm SRH and now find themselves out of the race for the IPL 2024 qualifiers.
